No Shark Fin Soup in my Company CNY Dinner

with 9 comments

Last Monday, had the company’s CNY Dinner at Raffles Country Club with my colleagues.

So I purposely borrowed a camera for this event.

Quite a wonderful evening. One thing I realised was that the dinner had no shark fins as a dish. Contrasting to the tradition, usually during Chinese special occassion, the Chinese would prefer to see Shark Fins as a symbol of wealth and status.

If this situation happened to me 5 years ago, I would think like…

“What lah?!?! No shark fin soup?!!! What kind of dinner is this?!!? So lousy one… Must have Shark Fin Soup lah!!! Why don’t have one… *sad* + *stamp my feet on the ground*”

The problem WAS I didn’t know how much sacrifice and disaster the shark fin soup causes to the environment and the sharks. I know now.

Eh.. I’m not shooting you lar… =.=”

The Truth About Shark Fin

The thing is, when the fishermen ever catch a shark, they won’t let the opportunity slipped away because they know how much the shark fins worth.

They will cut the fins and take it away from the sharks directly without killing them first. It’s like cutting the limbs of a human being when he is still alive. Imagine how much pain it causes to the shark.

And after getting what they want, they will then feel guilty and let the shark go, without their FINS !! How can they just leave the sharks there without fins to swim?!!!

This is just like after you had sex with someone… pass AIDS to he/she… and then happily say BYE BYE and leave the other to die…

The shark is not dead yet at this point. It will at least struggle for a few days before it dies of over-bleeding or hunger.

So what now? Stop eating shark fins. No matter how good it is. The sharks sure deserve a better way of dying than this. And it doesn’t serve any purpose at all. If you want to show the proof that you are rich, instead of serving people with shark fins, serve this.

A plate of money. I’m sure everyone will notice how rich you are then.

I’m really glad that Singapore and my company is started to take action against these inhumanity activities.

We can have a wonderful and properous dinner even without consuming any shark fin.

Yes you can do it. We can do it. Save the sharks!! Stop eating them!!

  1. i’ve stopped eating shark fin soup for the longest time because of that very reason… also, it does not have any value besides implying that you’re rich (for more ‘face’)

it’s pretty tough because everyone around the table will start teasing me. damn shitty lo

    • If you ate it, you would either grow a taste for it, or the people that served you the meal would recemend it to others and they might grow a taste for it. or since it costs so much, they would keep it on the menu because they get good money and because people ‘like’ it.
